Maha Ganapathy Temple, Gokarna, Karnataka
Maha Ganapathy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to
Lord Vinayaga located at Gokarna in Karnataka State, India. The Temple is
located at about 100 meters from Mahabaleshwar Temple. Lord Ganesha Idol is a
standing one which is quite unique and dates back to Ramayana Period. This is
an ancient temple, built in honour of Bala Ganesha who saved the Athma Lingam
from Ravana.
Legends
In legend, the Sri Maha Ganapathi temple was built in honour
of the boy Ganesha. Ganesha deceived the demon Ravana and saved
the Atmalinga that is now installed in the Mahabaleshwar temple. The
image of Vinayaka bears a dent, said to have been caused when Ravana, enraged
at the loss of the Athma Lingam had hit him.
The
Temple
This is a very small temple located in the vicinity of
Mahabaleshwar Temple. This Temple houses the granite image of Ganesha. The
image is 5 feet (1.5 m) tall and two-handed; at the top of its head there
is hole that is said to be a mark of a violent blow inflicted by Ravana. This will
be shown by the priest on our request in early morning time during abishekam
time. At that time devotees are allowed into the garbha griha and to touch the
lord and place 'garika' at lord's feet.
It is a custom that devotees need to visit this temple first
before heading towards Mahabaleshwar Temple. The temple has its own identity
and is also known as "Siddha Ganapati" Interestingly, there are
6 temples, all along this coastline, which show Ganesha in the same form. These
5 other temples are located at Idagunji, Anegudde, Hattiangady,
Mangalore and Kasargod.

again from 5 PM to 9 PM.
