Sreevallabha Temple, Thiruvalla – Literary Mention
Sree Vallabha Kshetra Mahatmiyam in Sanskrit written in the tenth century praises the glory of Sree Vallabha. Sree Vallabha Charitham Kavyam, Thukalasura Vadham (kathakali), Sree Vallabha Vijayam, Sree Vallabheswara Suprabhatham, Yajanavali samgraham and Sree Vallabha Karnamritha Sthothram also praises the glories of Sree Vallabha. It is one among the 108 Divya Desams temples revered by the great Tamil saints Alwars of 6th and 7th century AD. Out of the 108 Divya Desams, it lies in the 90th place. Thirumangai Azhvaar and Nam Azhvaar had sung 22Paasurams about the Lord of this Temple.
The Tamil Vaishnavite saints Nammalvar of the 5th century AD (in Divya Prabhandham) and Thirumangai Alwar of the 9th century AD (Paasurams in Divya Prabhandham) had composed devotional hymns in praise of the temple and addressed him as Kolapiran, Thiru Vazhmarban and Sundarayan. In Paasurams of Tirumangai Alwar and Nammalwar, Thiruvalla is referred as Thiruvalla Vai, Sree Vallabha as Sree Kolapiran Perumal and Thayar (Mahalakshmi) as Selva Thirukozhunthu Naachiyaar or Vaathsalya Devi.
Thirumangai Azhvaar's Praise:
Thirumangai Azhvaar, who has not sung praises of too many of the Malai Naatu Divya Desam Lords, has dedicated 10 verses to Thiruvalla Lord and has referred to the Lord as ‘Valla Vaazh’.
'உருவின் ஆர்பிரவி சேர் ஊன் பொதி நரம்பு
தோல் குரம்பையுள் புக்கு
அருவி நோய் செய்து நின்று,
ஐவர் தாம் வாழ்வதற்கு அஞ்சினா யேல்
திருவின் ஆர வேதம் நான்கு ஐந்து தீ
வேல்வியோடு அங்கம் ஆறும்
மருவினார் வல்லவாழ் சொல்லுமா வல்லை
ஆய் மருவு நெஞ்சே'
