Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala – Varaha Swamy Temple

Varaha Swamy Temple or Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, situated at hill town of Tirumala in Tirupati, Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh state, India. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Varaha, third incarnation of Vishnu's Dasavatharam. The temple is situated on the northern premises of Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala, on north west corner of Swami Pushkarini. This temple is believed to be older than the Venkateswara Shrine. The temple is part of Tirumala Venkateswara Temple and is being administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.

Legends

As per legend, after saving the Earth from Hiranyaksaha, Lord Varaha stayed on this hill on the northern bank of Swami Pushkarini. Hence Tirumala Hills is also referred to as Adi Varaha Kshetra. During the beginning of Kaliyuga, Lord Varaha donated land to Lord Venkateswara on his request. As a gratitude, Lord Venkateswara offered first bell, puja and Naivedya to Varaha Swamy before they were offered to him. This is being followed as a tradition even today.

The Temple

The temple is situated in the Northern bank of Swami Pushkarini and is accessed from North Mada street of Venkateswara Temple. This temple is believed to be older than the Venkateswara Shrine. The presiding deity is Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy, an incarnation of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu in the form of a wild boar.

The Temple remains open from 05.30 AM to 12.00 Noon and 05.00 PM to 09.00 PM.

Festivals

Daily rituals are held as per Vaikanasa Agama. Chakrasnanam event during Annual Brahmotsavams, Vaikunta Dwadasi, Ratha Sapthami will be held in the mukha mandapa of Varaha Swamy Temple. Varaha Jayanti is also celebrated. Special Abhishekam is performed every year, to the presiding deity in the holy month of Shravana, with the advent of the Shravana star on the auspicious occasion of Varaha Jayanthi.

Religious Significance

Based on the legend, Naivedya to the Lord Varaha will be offered before offering to Lord Venkateswara. is customary to offer prayers to Lord Varaha before worshipping at Sri Venkateswara Temple. Devotees also offer Naivedya at this shrine before moving to the main temple at Tirumala. Lord Varaha Swamy can be worshipped in three main ways of Yajna Varaha, Adi Varaha and Pralaya Varaha. It is believed that pilgrimage to Tirupati will not be complete without having darshan of Varaha Swamy.
