Varshikotsavam:
Varshikotsavam is a 28-day long festival at Chengannur temple which begins on the asterism Thiruvathira of Dhanur Masam (December – January) and ends on Thiruvathira of Makara Masam (January – February). Special rituals are performed during these days. The Aarattu (ritual dip in the river) is on Thiruvathira day. This festival attracts thousands of people from different locations in Kerala and also outside the state.
Shivaratri:
Shivrathri is another important festival of this temple. A large crowd assembles here in this festival. Arayas of Alappattu in Karunagappalli, comes here on this day and performs poojas and vazhibadus. This custom was started centuries before in connection with the renovation of the temple.
Thulasamkrama Neyyattu (Ghee Abhishekam):
This is the Ghee Abhishekam festival of the Chengannur Temple. This ceremony is conducted on every 1st day of Thulam (October – November). On this day 36 paras of ghee is showered on the ‘Shivalingam’. ‘Paras’ is a measurement in Malayalam. This tradition was started in connection with the finding of the Shiva Lingam. The ghee is collected from devotees and normally gets more than hundreds of ‘Paras’ as offerings.
Chitra Pournami:
Chitra Pournami is another important festival at this temple. This is an important day for the devotees of Devi. Special poojas are conducted on this day.
