Kartikesvara Temple is a Hindu
Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva
located in Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Odisha, India. The temple is surrounded by
residential buildings in the eastern side and local shops (Cabins) market
complex in the southern side.
History
The Temple is believed to be
built in 13th Century CE during Ganga Period. The temple is looked
after by the Gandhi Garabadu Mahaprasad Anusthana under the chief priest Gandhi
Garabadu.
The Temple
The Temple is facing towards
west. It is a living temple. Presiding Deity is called as Kartikesvara. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam
within a circular yonipitha. The Sanctum is square in plan. The temple is buried up to the jangha portion.
The Temple is Pancharatha on plan. The vimana is
of rekha order and jaga mohan is a pidha Deul. The temple
walls are plain.
The door jambs of the jagamohana
carved with three plain vertical bands and an image of Gajalakshmi at the
lalatabimba. The architrave above the doorjambs is carved with the usual
Navagraha panel. The Temple was built with Laterite stones and Dry masonry. There
is no compound wall, but it is within the boundary wall of Gandhi Garabadu
Mahaprasada Anusthana and Narayana Maharana’s residential plot.
