Chakra Narasimha Temple is a Hindu
Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Puri, a famous pilgrimage town in
the state of Odisha, India. The Temple is also called as Chakra Theertha or Chakra
Narasimha Deula. This Temple is an important pilgrimage site near the sea shore
of Puri.
The Temple is located at about 1.5 Kms from Puri Railway
Station, 3 Kms from Puri Bus Stand and 4 Kms from Puri Jagannatha Temple. It is situated towards the
northern end of Puri town. It is located on the right side of Chakra Tirtha
Road, leading from Subhas Bose Chowk to Penthakota, the fisherman village.
Legends
Location of sacred Daru:
This is the place where the
sacred Daru (divine log of wood for the creation of deities of Lord Jagannath
temple during Navakalevara)
for construction of first idol of Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarsana
Chakra touched ground after floating in sea and finally was taken by King Indradyumna.
Shrine of Varuna:
It is also an important site as
a shrine dedicated to Varuna, the father of Lakshmi or
the father-in-law of Jagannath as per legends is constructed.
Nilachakra:
It is believed by local people
that once there was a cyclone in Puri and the Nilachakra (the
wheel at top of Jagannath Temple) was displaced from its location, flown across
the sky and finally fell at Chakra Tirtha.

The Temple was built in 14th
Century CE by Ganga Kings.

The temple is facing towards
north The temple is square on plan. The temple is Panchangabada in elevation. The
temple is consisting of a pidha vimana and a frontal porch of Kalingan order.
The presiding deities of the temple are three idols of Lord Narasimha
known as Abhaya Narasimha, Chakra Narasimha
and Lakshmi Narasimha.
These three different forms of Lord Narasimha
as worshipped at Chakra Tirtha have unique values in Hindu religion.
The form of Abhaya Narasimha
represents Sri Balabhadra. The form of Chakra Narasimha
represents Goddess Subhadra and the form of Lakshmi Narasimha
represents Lord Jagannath. There is a large Chakra (divine weapon of Lord
Vishnu) in granite in this Temple. It is being worshipped in water in the
sanctum sanctorum with a statue of Lord Narayan at the centre, known as Chakra Narayana.
The Parsvadevatas niches houses idols
of recent installation. The dvarapala niches houses four armed Vaishnavite
dvarapalas standing over a plain pedestal with outstretched legs. The architrave
above the doorjambs are carved with Navagrahas seated in padmasana within
semicircular niches flanked by two ganas. There is a shrine dedicated to
Varuna, the father of Goddess Lakshmi, in the temple premises.
Festivals
Chakra Tirtha temple has close
association with Lord Jagannath
temple and every year the Agnyamala from Lord Jagannath comes
to Lord Narasimha. Narasimha Janma festival is observed in this temple with
great devotion.
