Narendra
Tank, Puri, Odisha
Narendra Tank is one of the sacred Tirthas, located
in Puri, a famous pilgrimage town in the state of Odisha, India. It is one of the largest tanks
in Orissa and believed to be built in the 15th century CE. It is also
known as Chandana Pushkarini. The famed Chandana Yatra of Lord Jagannath is celebrated
annually in this Tank. The Tank is located at Mauza Dandimala Sahi. The Tank is
located at about 1 Km from Puri Bus Stand, 2
Kms from Puri Railway Station and 2 Kms from Puri Jagannatha Temple.

History
The tank was built in 15th
century AD by Narendra Dev, who shouldered the responsibility of the kingdom
with Kapilendra Deva. Many medieval Oriya texts described the fame of this holy
tank.
The Tank
The Narendra
tank covers an area of over 3.240 hectares (8 acres). It
is 834 feet by 873 feet in size. The water level of the tank is 10
feet below the present road level. There is an island in the center of the
lake, with a small temple called Chandana mandapa connected to the south bank
with a bridge. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra.
There are many small and big temples surrounding this tank.
The tank is equipped with 16
Ghats (bathing places) for the benefit of devotees. The main ghat has a flight
of steps made up of Khandolite. Fourteen are named after the fourteen sons of
Narendra Deva, one after the queen Kalandi Devi and one after Narendra
Deva. There are three Ghats on the east, three on the north, six on the
south and four on the west.
