Temple, Puri, Odisha
Narasimha Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Puri, a famous pilgrimage town in the
state of Odisha, India. The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Puri Bus Stand,
1.5 Kms from Puri Railway Station and 3 Kms from Puri Jagannatha Temple. The
Temple is situated to
the western side of Gundicha Temple and to the east of
the Indradyumna Tank.
Devotees can approach the temple on the right side of the road leading
from Gundicha
temple towards Matiapara square. Non-Hindus are not allowed
inside the temple, but the deities are visible from the door.
Legends
Yajna Narasimha:
As per Skanda
Purana, Once King Indradyumna stayed near Nilakanthesvara Temple to
make arrangements to perform Ashvamedha
Yajna (Horse sacrifice) for one thousand years. On the advice of Sage Narada,
King Indradyumna made a Narasimha image out of black stone and placed the image
under black sandal wood tree and worshipped him. It is believed that in front
of this temple the Ashvamedha Yajna took place. Hence, he came to be called as Yajna
Narasimha.
Shanta Narasimha:
As per the legend, When
Kalapahad attacked Puri and was smashing deities of various temples, he saw Shanta
Narasimha and his anger got subsided. He
could not break the deity as he had planned.

Century CE by Ganga Kings.

Festivals
Narasimha Janma and Satapuri
Amavasya are observed in this temple with great devotion. During festivals,
flower garlands (ajnamalas) are taken from Jagannatha and are kept here. This
temple has also connected with the Navakalevara ceremony of Lord Jagannatha.
Prayers
Devotees will earn more punya if
they worship of Nilakanthesvara, Yagna Narasimha and Panchamukhi Hanuman (Lord
Hanuman image with five faced) after the sacred bath in Indradyumna Tank.
