Rasamancha, Begunkodor, West Bengal

Rasamancha is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Begunkodor village in the Jhalda II CD block in the Jhalda subdivision of the Purulia district of West Bengal, India. The temple is one of the state protected monuments in West Bengal declared by Archaeological Survey of India. It is situated at the border of the states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The railway station of Begunkodor is famously called as ghost station due to the frequent paranormal activities happening in the station.


The Rasamancha

The Rasamancha is situated in the middle of the Begunkodor market. There are no idols inside the temple, but the decoration and the artworks are of notable. This structure is different from the regular temple as it is regularly used as a market place for the locals.

Connectivity

The Rasamancha is located at about 100 metres from Begunkodor Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Jhalda, 10 Kms from Begunkodor Railway Station, 10 Kms from Jhalda Railway Station, 38 Kms from Purulia, 85 Kms from Ranchi, 88 Kms from Ranchi Airport and 288 Kms from Kolkata. The temple is situated on Purulia to Jhalda route. Begunkodor is well connected with Purulia and Jhalda by bus.

Durga Gudi Kalyani is an ancient stepwell, located on the banks of the Malaprabha river in the heart of Aihole, an historical town, in Bagalkot District in Karnataka, India. The stepwell is situated close to the Durga Temple.

The Stepwell

This Stepwell is smaller than the well near Badiger Gudi. It is situated close to the Durga Temple. This stepwell was built to ensure adequate water supply to the temples in the complex. The water stains on the walls clearly indicate dipping water-table over time in the region.

The temple complex is located at about 100 meters from Aihole Bus Stand. Pathra Group of Temples, West Bengal

Pathra Group of Temples are group of Hindu temples located in Pathra village in Midnapore Sadar CD block in the Medinipur Sadar subdivision of the Paschim Medinipur district in the state of West Bengal, India. The temples are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Goddess Sakthi. The temples of Pathra can be classified into three complex, namely Navaratna Temple Complex, Kalachand Temple Complex and Bandopadhyay Temple Complex.





Apart from these temple complexes, there are few individual temples namely Dharmaraj Temple, Shitala Temple, Durgeshwar Temple and Das Mahavidya Temple. Pathra also houses several ruined structures and dilapidated temples. The temples are situated on the northern bank of the Kangsabati river. The temples are protected as monuments of national importance by the central Archaeological Survey of India.

Pathra is located at about 12 Kms from Midnapore, 13 Kms from Midnapore Railway Station, 13 Kms from Midnapore Central Bus Stand, 25 Kms from Kharagpur, 136 Kms from Kolkata and 144 Kms from Kolkata Airport. Devotees need to travel from Kharagpur to Midnapore and take a right turn at Midnapore Khudiram Bose Park and travel for 9 Kms along the northern bank of the Kangsabati river to reach Pathra.

Pawaya Archeological Site is an archeological site, located in Pawaya Village in Bhitarwar Tehsil in Gwalior District in Madhya Pradesh, India. The site consists of an ancient brick temple and several mounds with ruined brick structure. The site is situated on the western bank of Sindh river.

Lohani Caves, Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

Lohani Caves are rock cut caves located near Mandi historical site in Mandu Town in Dhar Tehsil in Dhar District in Madhya Pradesh, India. These caves are located on the way from Mandu village to Royal Enclave. The rock cut caves has been classified as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).


History

It is believed that these caves were excavated between 11th and 12th century CE.

The Caves

The Lohani caves are simple excavations without much of carvings and without any inscription recoding the date of their excavation. However, the archaeological studies have yielded Hindu statues and carvings such as those of Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu and Lakshmi. These suggest that these were likely Hindu monasteries, probably belonging to the Shaivism tradition. These rock cut caves were served as residences to Shaiva Yogis in ancient times.


There is a rock cut cistern in front of the caves. It is said that around 80 images found from the caves are kept in the local museum in the dharmashala of Hoshang Shah’s Tomb. It is also said that a temple for Lord Shiva existed near the caves once. But, the temple was destroyed during Muslim rule. The materials from the temple were used in their buildings. There is a monolithic pillar of about 5 metres high to the south of the caves. This pillar is considered as the remnant of the ancient temple.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Mandav Bus Stop, 22 Kms from Sirsodiya, 32 Kms from Gajipura, 37 Kms from Dhar, 61 Kms from Mhow Railway Station, 84 Kms from Indore Airport and 86 Kms from Indore. The temple is located at about 22 Kms from Sirsodiya off the Dhar to Gajipura route.

Karitalai Archeological Site is an ancient ruins of Hindu and Jain Temples, located in Karitalai village in Vijayraghavgarh Tehsil in Katni District in Madhya Pradesh, India. Karitalai Village houses few ancient remains of Hindu Temples, Jain Temples, large number of loose sculptures and architectural fragments. The ancient site has been classified as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).




History

Karitalai was called as Karanpura in ancient times named after the Kalachuri King Lakshmi Karna (1041-1073 CE). Karitalai was a regional capital during his rule. The earliest inscriptions of Kalchuris of Tripuri were found in this village. Vishnu Varaha Temple was built by Bhatt Someshwara Dixit, a royal officer under Kalachuri King Lakshmana Raja II. The sculptors from Karitalai was well known in medieval India for their expertise. They were involved in temple building activities of Khajuraho.

Archaeological Museum, Aihole, Karnataka

Archaeological Museum is located within the Durga Temple Complex, located in the heart of Aihole, an historical town, in Bagalkot District in Karnataka, India. The Museum is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.

History

The Museum was originally planned as a sculpture shed in the year 1970 to collect and exhibit the sculptures, inscriptions, and architectural members found during excavation in and around Aihole. It was converted into a full-fledged Museum in the year 1987 and extended in the year 2000.

The Museum

The museum comprises of six galleries and an open-air gallery. The museum houses 381 antiquities mainly comprises of stone sculptures of Brahmanical, Jaina and Buddhist faith, fragmentary carved architectural members, inscriptions, hero stones, sati stones, etc. All these were dated from 6th century CE to 15th century CE. The huge open-air gallery is situated in front of the Museum building.

It consists of a neatly arranged, named and dated collection of ancient sculptures found within and beyond Aihole. It exhibits Hero stones, Ganesha, Sapta Matrikas, seated figures in the Chaitya arch, Jaina sculptures, Naga and Nagini figures. The artifacts in the museum are dated between 6th and 15th centuries. The Gallery No 1 can be found immediately after entering the Museum building.

It exhibits life-size sculpture of Lajja Gauri with lotus head, a seated Buddha, Jaina, Lakulisa, Matrikas and Ganesha etc. The entrance on the right side leads to the Gallery No 2 and Gallery No 3. Sculptures of Ardhanarisvara, standing Vishnu, Matrikas, Kalabhairava and Dwarapalakas etc. are displayed in these galleries. The Gallery No 4 houses a valley model of Aihole village.

It shows the cluster of monuments in and around Aihole in the birds eye view.  The preservation works of the Aihole monuments are shown in the trans-slides boxes around the valley model. Trilingual audio, video & document film containing information about political history, art and architecture of Aihole, Badami, Pattadakal are available in the museum. The museum also has departmental publication sales counter and a reference library with good collection of books of history, art and architecture.

The Museum remains open from 09.00 AM to 05.00 PM on all days except Fridays.

Entrance Fees

Entrance Fee is Rs. 5/- per head for adults and Rs 25/- for camera. The entry is free for children up to 15 years.
