Behati Math, Behati, Madhya Pradesh

Behati Math is an ancient Hindu monastery located in Behati Village in Chanderi Tehsil in Guna District in Madhya Pradesh, India. This math is considered to an ancient seat of Tantric cult. This math is situated on the banks of Betwa river. The famous Gupta temple at Deogarh in Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh is situated on the opposite bank of Betwa river.

History

This math is believed to be built in 5th century by the Guptas based on the architectural style. The math is one of the state protected monuments in Madhya Pradesh declared by Archaeological Survey of India.

The Math

This math (monastery) is facing towards east. It has a low and spacious rectangular platform which can be approached from the western side. The platform is in dilapidated state. The math stands in the west of the platform leaving a spacious open courtyard in front of it. The math is almost square on plan. It measures externally 13.95 m x 14 m and internally 10.80 m square. The math has four pillars at the centre and six peripheral pilasters fixed along with the walls. It opens out to the east by three openings consisted of two pillars at the middle and two pilasters on either side.

The intercolumniation of the pillars in the middle is wider than the pillars and pilasters on the sides. The plain Chandra Sila is found in between in front of the two front pillars. The roof of the math is covered with stone slabs except the central bay. The central bay perhaps had a raised ceiling over a sort of clerestory. The pillars are carved with figures of deities, humans, kirtimukha, makara, gajshardul, lions, horses, swans, peacocks and floral patterns. The Math is characterized by vivid depiction of divinities. The Math has an inscription engraved in shankha script.

The math is located at about 15 Kms from Naron, 22 Kms from Chanderi, 23 Kms from Chanderi Bus Stand, 44 Kms from Mungaoli, 45 Kms from Piprai Gaon Railway Station, 107 Kms from Guna and 226 Kms from Bhopal Airport. The temple is situated at about 15 Kms to the south east of Naron on Chanderi to Mungaoli route.

Sivatirtha Matha is a Hindu religious monastery located in Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Odisha, India. The mutt is situated in the outskirts of old town of Bhubaneswar. The matha is situated in front of the northern entrance of Lingaraj temple across the Ratha road.


History

The Matha belonged to Sankaracharya Sampradaya. The endowments department of Odisha took over the matha in 1970.

The Matha

The matha is facing towards east. The wooden logs used for preparing the chariot of Lord Lingaraj are consecrated here in the monastery before used by the carpenters. The burial shrines of the matha are located within the matha premises in the eastern end. There are thirteen burial shrines arranged in two rows.


There are nine shrines in the rear row of which four shrines from the northern side have been encroached upon by a private compound wall. The shrines on the south are partially buried. There are four shrines in the front row of which three shrines are buried up to the gandi while the fourth one is buried up to the bada. The burial shrines are square on plan.

Festivals

Chandan Yatra and Dola Purnima are the most famous festival celebrated here. During Dola Purnima, Lord Lingaraja arrives to this Matha to take community lunch.

Adichunchanagiri Hill is a hill township located in Nagamangala Taluk in Mandya District in Karnataka State, India. This hill is famous for Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, Kalabhairaveshwara Swamy Temple, Pancha Lingas, and peacock sanctuary.



Legends

As per legend, two asuras namely Chuncha and Kancha were terrorizing the sages and people in this region. During that time, Lord Shiva came here for performing penance. The asuras started creating troubles for Lord Shiva also. Lord Shiva got angry and killed these asuras. After the annihilation of the asuras, Lord Shiva handed over this place to Siddha Yogi. Siddha Yogi founded a tradition of Natha. Thus, the place came to be called as Adichunchanagiri / Chunchanakote. Lord Shiva also assured Siddha Yogi that he would stay at Adichunchanagiri in the form of Panchalingas namely Gangadhareshwara, Chandramouleshwara, Malleshwara, Siddeshwara and Someshwara. Of the Panchalingas, Lord Gangadhareshwara is known as the presiding deity and Chandramouleshwara is known as Atmartha Devatha. Thus, the place came to be called as Panchalinga Kshetra.



History

Adichunchanagiri is the seat of Swami of Vokkaliga community. The temples and the matha of Adichunchanagiri received extensive patronage from Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara Kingdom. The present head of Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math is Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji. He is the 72nd head of this Mutt. He became the head of the Mutt in 2013. The Mutt grew rapidly under the 71st pontiff Jagadguru Padma Bhushan Sri Dr. Balagangadharanatha Swamiji who headed the mutt from 1974 to 2013.

Chandla Matha is a Hindu religious monastery located in Kadwaya Village in Isagarh Tehsil in Ashok Nagar District in Madhya Pradesh, India. The Matha was affiliated to the Mattamayura sect of the Shaiva pontiffs. The Kadwaya village is famous for its temples, sculptures and structures such as monasteries, ruined mosque, wells, tanks and baodi.

The Matha

The Chandla Matha is situated to the south of the Garhi Shiva Temple within the fort. It is a double storied large monastery building. It measures 93 feet long and 93 feet breadth. It has a central open square courtyard supported by pillared corridors on all sides with some meditation cells and halls. The exterior walls are plain with a double row of windows and a small entrance on the north. The matha is in ruined state and fortified with surrounding walls. The fortification was constructed around the monastery built in 15th century CE during the regime of the Malwa Sultans.

Gopalji Matha Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Sambalpur City in Sambalpur District in Odisha, India. The Temple is currently under the control of Endowment Department, Government of Odisha. The Temple is situated on the left bank of the river Mahanadi at Kamil Bazar.



History

Gopalji Matha Temple Complex was built by the saint prince Bansi Gopal, the third son of Madhukara Deva (1630-1650 CE), the fourth Chauhan ruler of Sambalpur. Bansi Gopal founded the Gopalji Matha and spent his whole life as its first Mahanta. He had constructed two temples in this Matha complex, one is Gopalji temple and the other is Bada Jagannath temple. It is currently under the control of Endowment Department, Government of Odisha.



The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. The temple consists of vimana and jagamohana. The vimana is square on plan and the jagamohana is oblong. The vimana and jagamohana of the temple follows the Khakhara pattern of architecture. The sanctum has two subsidiary lateral chambers on either sides opening to the oblong hall of the jagamohana of impoverished khakhara order. The Sanctum enshrines Lord Krishna with his consort Radha. The niches in the jangha portion of the wall houses several Vaishnavite images.



Bada Jagannath Temple:

The temple is situated inside the Gopalji Matha temple complex. It is a living temple and facing towards east. It is built on a raised platform and can be accessed through flight of steps on the eastern side. This temple consists of rekha vimana with a pradakshina patha and a flat roofed Jagamohana. The sanctum enshrines three images of Balabhadra, Jagannath and Subhadra. The niches on the exterior walls enshrines Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesha, Narasimha, Rudrani, Varaha, Rama, Parasurama and Vamana.

Rathayatra, Dola Purnima, Rakhi Purnima, Kartika Purnima and Netrotsava, are the festivals celebrated here.

Gopal Tirtha Matha is a Hindu religious monastic institution, located in Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Odisha, India. This Matha is a branch of the Gopala Tirtha Matha of Puri. The matha is located in front of the Chitrakarini temple, across the Ratha Road near Badheibanka chowk, in old town, Bhubaneswar.


History

The Matha was constructed in 19th century CE. This Matha is a branch of the Gopala Tirtha Matha of Puri. Gopala Tirtha was one of the prominent disciples of Sankaracharya, who commissioned monastic establishments in Puri and Bhubaneswar.

The matha is facing towards south and rectangular on plan. The Matha is double storeyed structure and is in dilapidated condition. The Matha consists of sixty rooms, out of which fifty are totally ruined and the remaining ten rooms are in dilapidated condition.

Mahadeva Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Chandreh Village in Rampur Naikin Tehsil in Sidhi District in Madhya Pradesh, India. The Temple is situated near the confluence of River Son and Banas. The temple has been classified as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).



Legends

As per legend, it is believed that the temple was constructed in one night by Vishwakarma, the divine architect of gods in contemporary Hinduism.


History

The Shaiva monastery and the temple was established in 973CE by Prabodha Shiva, Guru of Chedi rulers (Kalachuris) and his disciple Prashanta Shiva. Prabodha Shiva belonged to Matta Mayura Shaiva sect. This sect is known for their spiritual practice and propagation of Shaiva Siddhanta. The sect established several monasteries and temples in Kadwaya temple, Ashok Nagar and Survaya.


The inscriptions found in this temple and the adjoining monastery records the information about the construction of temple, monastery and social life during that period. The inscription further credits Yuvaraja Deva I of bringing Prabodha Shiva, the revered saint of the Mattamayura sect to Golaki Matha at Gorgi. The place was referred as Bhramara Shaila (Bhramara Hill) in the inscriptions.
