Kiriteswari Temple, Kiriteswar – History

Kiriteswari Temple, Kiriteswar – History
The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The original Temple was destroyed in 1405. The present temple was re-constructed by Darpanarayan, king of Lalgola in the 19th century. Yogendranaryan Roy, the late king of Lalgola had renovated and taken care of the temple built by Darpanarayan Roy. It is said that Mother Kiriteswari was the presiding deity of the ruling house of Murshidabad.
When the ruling families of Murshidabad capital were at the height of glory, Kiriteswari Devi was worshipped by hundreds of devotees every day. It is also believed that Bhagwan Roy built the temple of Mother Kiriteswari along with the help of his few followers. It is also said that this land was given to him by Mughal Emperor Akbar.
People also believe that the old temple with the entrance toward south was built by Bhagwan Roy while the new edifice with east facing was built by Maharaj Darpanarayan Roy. As per historical records, a contemporary of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Mangal Vaishnab was a shebait of this ancient temple of Bengal. With the gradual Muslim invasion and with the coming of British, the glory of Mother Kiriteswari Temple faded away.
