Legends
Lord Jagannatha engaged Hanuman to
protect Puri Dham from his Father-in-Low Ocean. He was entering Puri
often to meet her daughter Lakshmi and him. People of Puri suffered a lot because of his
frequent intrusion. Thus, Lord Hanuman was posted
by Jagannatha to guard Puri in this place and ensure that Ocean waves
would never enter Puri. However, Lord Hanuman left the place once, without
informing Lord Jagannatha to visit Ayodhya.
In his absence, the ocean
entered Puri and people suffered a lot due to the sudden intrusion of ocean. Lord
Jagannatha brought Hanuman back from Ayodhya and bound him with the
rope or Bedi, ordered him to never leave this place and do his duty
properly. Hence, he came to be called as Bedi Hanuman. Hanuman left this place
as he was fed with Khichadi prasadam only.
He wanted to taste delicious food,
so he secretly visited Ayodhya at night. After this incident, Lord Jagannath
ordered his servants to feed Lord Hanuman with special Mahaprasada daily.
