Gangotri Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga, located in Gangotri in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. It is on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,100 metres (10,200 ft). It is one of the four sacred and important pilgrimage sites of Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.

History

The original Gangotri Temple was built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa in 18^th Century CE.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Gangotri temple is from April/May to June and September to October/November.

Connectivity

Gangotri Temple is located at about 26 Kms from Harsil, 100 Kms from Uttarkashi, 263 Kms from Rishikesh Railway Station, 266 Kms from Dehradun Airport, 267 Kms from Rishikesh, 285 Kms from Haridwar, 286 Kms from Haridwar Railway Station and 503 Kms from New Delhi Airport. Gangotri is situated at the end of NH 108. Pilgrims need to go to Uttarkashi by GMOU bus or private taxi. From Uttarkashi, four wheelers are available on shared basis to Gangotri. Gangotri is connected with motorable roads, buses and taxis from important destinations like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Uttarkashi and Tehri Garhwal.
