The
Temple
The Temple was built in Nagara
style. It is
probably the earliest temple built on the raised platform. The Temple consists of Mukha Mandapam, Maha Mandapam and
Sanctum with a small circumambulatory path for doing pradakshina. The Mukha Mandapam is a four pillared structure in the
front of this Temple. The Tower over the sanctum follows rekha style with
Amalaka and Kalasha on top. The entrance doorway is carved with lord Vishnu and
some toranas made of flowers.
The sanctum doorway is flanked by Ganga and Yamuna
goddesses, as well as two dvarapalas. A sculpture of Nagendra can be seen in
the doorway. The Maha Mandapam has
sculptures of Gajalakshmi, Uma Maheswara, Kubera, elephants, swan, humans
riding mythical animals, mayura (peacock) motifs and amorous couples
in Mithuna scenes.
There is a sculpture of Saptamatrikas placed in the Mahamandapam.
The pillars and ceilings of Mukha Mandapam has miniature
sculptures of Gandharvas, Kubera, Ganesha, toranas, amorous couples in Mithuna
scenes and floral designs. The doorway of the mukha mandapa has seven female
heads appeared like pulling the chariot. The outer walls of the temple are
plain and simple. The outer walls are decorated with neatly carved lattice
windows to let natural light come into the circumambulation path.
