Legends
It is known from Brahma Purana that on a Tuesday in the
month of Chaitra, Lord Brahma had begun the creation of the universe. The
bi-junction mode of worship is reflective of the concept of bewildering
confusion. At a bi-junction point, it is but natural that one cannot offhand
know which road of the two actually leads to one’s proper destination. At the
time of creation of the universe, Lord Brahma was on similarly the horns of several
dilemmas. It is said in Brahma Purana that Maa Mangala at that time came to the
rescue of Brahma and gave him proper direction after which of the creation of
the universe could be possible.
The Temple
The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Mangala. In
Odia language, Bata means Way, since Goddess Mangala is enshrined on the way to
Puri, she is known as Bata Mangala. She is believed to guide the pilgrims to
Puri. The pilgrims and all tourist vehicles used to offer puja and darshan with
all respects at Bata Mangala temple while entering into Puri and leaving Puri
for their safe and happy journey. The deity is very beautiful and has two hands
and three eyes. She is sitting in padmasana posture with smiling face. The two
hands are holding pasa and ankusa.
Festivals
The Panthei Osha, also known as Bata Osha as a popular
religious ritual is intimately connected with Goddess. This Puja is conducted
by women at the bi-junction points of village-roads. At night, the women
observing the ritual install a pasple and worship it as the symbol of Bata
Mangala. They offer a peculiar type of sweetmeat known as Atakali to the deity.
The Puja is performed on all Tuesdays in month of Chaitra. At the time of Nabakalebara festival
of Lord Jagannath,
the carts loaded with sacred wood entered into Shrikhetra after performing puja
at Bata Mangala temple. Famous rituals like Durga Puja, Dussehra and Chaitra
Mangalabara are observed with great devotion in this temple.
