Ramachandi Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Goddess Shakti, located in Puri, a famous pilgrimage town in the
state of Odisha, India. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Ramachandi. The Temple is located at about 650 meters from Puri
Railway Station, 800 meters from Puri Bus Stand and 3 Kms from Puri Jagannatha
Temple. The
temple is located in the Bankimuhana Ramachandi Sahi, Puri. It is situated on
the left side of the road leading from Red Cross Road to the Gajapati Nagar. It
is situated just behind the Cholera Hospital of Puri town.
Legends
According to local tradition,
the deity is named Ramachandi because lord Rama worshipped the present deity
Chandi for her blessing to attain victory over Ravana.
History
The Temple was built in 17th
Century AD by Bhoi of Khurdha.
The
Temple
The Temple is facing towards
south. The temple is triratha on plan. The Temple consists of Rekha vimana and
pidha jagamohana of Kalingan order. The presiding deity is a six-armed
Mahisasuramardini (killing buffalo demon) Durga. She is housed in the sanctum. The
vimana and the jagamohana are square on plan. The vimana is devoid of
decoration except the udyota Simha at the center of rahapagas in the gandi.
The Parsvadevatas niches contain
images of Kali, Varahi and one unidentified image. The puranic stories of
Mahisasuramardini, Uma Maheswara, Savitri Satyavan, Krishna Lila etc. are
recently depicted in the additional hall in front of the jagamohana. The images
of Dasamahavidya in their terrific form can be found in the niches on either
side of the doorjambs.
Festivals
Durga Puja, Dussehra and Kalipuja
are the festivals celebrated here with much fanfare. Sola Puja is observed here
for 16 days consecutively during Durga Puja.
