Astasambhu Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Puri, a famous pilgrimage town in the state
of Odisha, India. In
local language Ashta means Eight and Sambhu is another name of Lord Shiva. The
Temple is located in Tiadi Sahi of Puri. The Temple is located at about 2 Kms from Puri Bus
Stand, 3 Kms from Puri Railway Station and 4 Kms from Puri Jagannatha Temple.
Legends
As per the legend, the
Shivalingas in the sanctum, were captured when Puri Kings defeated opposing
kingdoms. Also, once, a Puri King was cured from a fatal disease by Asha
Sambhu.
History
Ashta Sambhu are the family
deities of King Prataparudra and were worshiped even before the time of Sri
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Gaura Nitai deities in this temple were personally
installed by King Prataparudra.
The
Temple
The Asta Sambhu temple is a
small temple. This Temple houses a cluster of eight Shiva Lingas made of
precious stones. Each one of them is of a different colour. The Shivalingas
appear different in colour when looked at from different directions. These
eight Shiva lingas are called as Markandeswar, Yajneswara, Nilakanthesvara,
Vilveswara, Kapalamochana, Balesvara, Isanesvara and Pataleswara.
