Kalpeshwar Temple, Chamoli, Uttarakhand
Kalpeshwar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord
Shiva located at an elevation of 2,200 m (7,217.8 ft) in the
picturesque Urgam valley in the Garhwal region
in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand state in India. This temple is
the fifth temple to be visited in the Panch
Kedar pilgrimage circuit, comprising five Shiva temples in the
Garhwal region. The other temples in the circuit include: Kedarnath,
Tungnath
and Rudranath to
be visited before Madmaheshwar and Kalpeshwar to
be visited after Madmaheshwar. The Hair locks (Jata) of the bull,
considered a divine form of Shiva, is worshipped at this temple, believed to be
built by the Pandavas, the heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
Kalpeshwar is the only Panch Kedar temple accessible
throughout the year. The temple priests
at this temple are the Dasnamis and Gossains, disciples of Adi
Shankara. Alaknanda and Kalpganga rivers can be seen all along the
way while going from Helang to Kalpeshwar. The Buddha Kedar Temple and Dhyan
Badri Temple, one of the Sapta Badri temples are situated on the way to the
Kalpeshwar temple.

The Temple
Kalpeshwar Temple is the only Panch Kedar temple
accessible throughout the year. This Temple is located at an elevation of
2,200 m (7,217.8 ft) in the picturesque Urgam Valley. A small trail
with crude steps leads to the archway of the temple, colourful with hanging
bells. The temple is built with granite stones. The tower built of stone slabs,
has a wooden deck with arch openings. A traditional porch was built later for
space for temple facilities.
The cave passage has rock carvings on symbolizing Lord's
tresses. The sanctum is preceded by a natural cave passage. The Sanctum houses
Shiva Linga. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped in his divine form of Jatas (Hairs).
Hence, Lord Shiva is also called as Jatadhar or Jateshwar. This Temple houses
the famous Kalpa Vriksha tree here which is said to be the wish granting tree
in Hindu mythology.
Festivals
Maha Shivrathri is the most famous festival celebrated
here with much fanfare.

Kalpeshwar. Visitors can also stay at the temple dharmashala. Alternatively,
visitors can also setup their tents. There are many guest houses in Devgram,
which offer accommodation and food at very nominal charges.
Best time to Visit
The best time to visit Kalpeshwar is from May-June and
September-October.
