Rohini Kunda, Puri – Legends
Remains
of Krishna in the form of Sacred Log (Daru Brahma):
As per the Puranas, the
hunter Jara Savara accidentally killed Krishna and
cremated him. Krishna appeared in Jara's dreams and told him that his remains
would transform into a log that would float from the sea to the Rohini Kunda. Indradyumna
with Jara's help located the sacred log (Daru Brahma) from which the idol of
Jagannath was carved.
Bhusanda
Kaka:
As per Skanda Purana, Bhusanda Kaka was cursed by the
sage Lomasa. Anticipating his death, he flew to Shankha Kshetra, going to
Rohini Kund to take bath in the sacred waters and worshipped Lord Jagannath in his
temple. The crow perched upon a branch of the ancient Kalpavata, a wish fulfilling
tree, praying for liberation from the curse. Suddenly Kaka Bhusanda died, fell
into the Rohini Kund and got transformed to a form of Vishnu with four hands
and holding a conch (Sankha), wheel (chakra), lotus (padma) & mace (gada). Since
the time of his liberation, he has been worshipped here as Bata Narayana.
Nabi
Chakra & Crow as witness:
King Gala Madhava insisted that the Jagannath temple
belonged to him after the construction of temple by Indradyumna. Lord Brahma
came and settled the dispute, with the crow and chakra serving as witness on
the side of King Indradyumna. The two have remained there ever since. King Gala
Madhava himself is said to have remained at Rohini Kund, where he eternally
offers prayers to Lord Jagannatha.
Naval
portion of Sankha Kshetra:
According to the Puranas, this Rohini Kunda is situated
at the naval portion of Sankha Kshetra.
Karana
Water:
The Kund is said to contain Karana, or the water of
creation. This water is secretly stored in this Rohini Kunda.
