Sangameshwara Temple, Alampur, Telangana

Sangameshwara Temple, Alampur, Telangana
Sangameshwara Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Alampur Town near Kurnool in Jogulamba Gadwal District in Telangana, India. Sangameshwara is derived from the word Sangam meaning confluence. Hence the temple is also known as Kudavelly Sangameshwara Temple. The Sangameswara temple was originally situated near the Kudavelly village at the confluence of Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers. As Kudavelly was coming under submergence area due to Srisailam Hydro Electric Project the temple was transplanted to Alampur at its current location.

This is an active temple with regular pujas being performed. This temple is situated on the left bank of the Tungabhadra River near the meeting point of Tungabhadra River and Krishna River at the border of Andhra Pradesh. This Temple is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official List of Monuments prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India under The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.

History
Sangameshwara Temple was originally built at Kudavelly, by the confluence (Sangam) of two major sacred rivers of ancient importance, the Tungabhadra and Krishna. Sangameshwara comes from the word Sangam meaning confluence of two or more rivers. The Temple was constructed by Pulikesi I (540 CE to 566 CE). This Temple might be precursor to the Navabrahma Temples. The inscriptions found in the 1980s at the Arka Brahma and Bala Brahma temples mention a pre-existing Mahadevayatana or main temple with Linga referring to the Sangameshwara Temple.

The Sangameshwara Temple has been relocated to its present location near the Navabrahma Temples, as its original site built at Kudavelly, some 20 Kms away, is now flooded by the Srisailam Dam hydroelectric project.  The temple is dismantled by ASI in the year of 1979 and rebuilt in its current place. The process took up to 10 years, but the structure has been beautifully preserved and reconstructed. The transplantation work was completed by January 1990.
