The Temple
The Swarga Brahma Temple with an imposing tower is
considered to be among the finest in Alampur and is an excellent specimen of
Chalukyan architecture and sculpture. This temple is the most elaborately ornamented
temple. The Temple was built in Nagara style and is
facing east. The
temple was built on an elevated platform. The
Temple is similar on plan to the Kumara Brahma Temple. It has a pair of Dikpalas
(directional guardians) in each corner of the temple.
The Temple consists of Mukha Mandapam, Maha Mandapam and
Sanctum with a small circumambulatory path for doing pradakshina. The Mukha
Mandapam is a six pillared structure in the front of this Temple. The ceiling
of the Maha Mandapam has Nagabandha. The pillars have several engraved human
figures. Some of these figures represent men riding lion and few mythical
animals. There are idols of Ganesha and Maharshis in the Maha Mandapam.
The doorway of the sanctum has figures of Dvarapalas, Ganga,
Yamuna with their vehicles along with Nagendra. The horned dvarapalas of Padma Brahma
are similar to Vishnukundins from coastal Andhra. The circumambulatory path has
images of Ganesha, Nagendra, Subrahmanya, Ducks and Lotus flowers. The vimana
over sanctum in rekha style is well preserved. The sukanasi in the vimana has a
wonderful carving of Shiva in dancing posture.
The outer walls of the temple have great carvings. Nataraja in
Ananda Tandava posture (dancing Shiva), Lingodbhava (Shiva emerging
from a Linga), Dakshinamurti (Shiva in yoga position as a teacher sitting under
a tree), Vamana (Trivikrama legend of Lord Vishnu),
Gangadhara, Krishna Lila, Bikshadana, Tripurantaka
Murti, Animals, Garuda-nose faces, Matru Murti and Ashtadikpalakas
are few of the carvings seen in the outer wall.
Several miniature temples like brackets are beautifully
carved on the outer walls. The temple also has common life scenes, as well as
amorous couples in various stages of courtship and Kama. The temple has
friezes showing four fables from the Panchatantra, along with a Sanskrit
inscription below that summarizes the moral of each fable. There is a Nandi idol installed on an elevated platform
opposite to the Temple. Swarga Brahma Temple was built during the reign of Vinayaditya
in 681 – 696 AD. An inscription found in the temple states that Lokaditya Ela Arasa
built it in the honour of the queen. There is
an inscription dating back to Chalukya ruler Vikramaditya I period.
Festivals
Sharan Navaratri is the biggest
festival at Alampur Temples. The concluding event, Theppotsavam (boat festival)
is an eye-catching event held on Vijaya Dasami at Krishna – Tungabhadra Sangamam
(confluence of River Krishna and Tungabhadra). Shivaratri is also celebrated
here.
