the dream of the builder and said to him that the temple should be so high that
the temple of Bageshwar could be seen from the top of this temple. Even,
goddess threatened to kill him failing to do so. As the task was nearly
impossible for him so he quit its construction midway.
The Temple Complex
The Temple Complex is situated in a picturesque location
next to a small rivulet. The Temple Complex consists of one large temple and 14
subsidiary shrines. Most of the shrines are situated around the major temple
and few were scattered around the temple complex. This large temple is
considered as the tallest temple in the region. Lord Shiva housed in the
sanctum is in the form of rock not as traditional Linga.
Temple 145, found at the Dandeshwar site, is also a 7th
to 8th century temple exhibits distinct style suggesting an
acceptance and proliferation of artist diversity. Its tower consists of stacked
series of amalaka in the form of cogged discs of shrinking diameter.
Below is the square sanctum (Garbha griha) whose doorframe and mandapa are
formed by square pillars. Inside the sanctum is a Chaturmukha Shiva Linga, each
face looking at a cardinal direction.
Some of the minor shrines houses Shiva Lingas on
circular Yonipitha and Chaturmukha Lingas. There is a life-size image of Paun
Raja or the king in Ashta Dhatu or an alloy of 8 metals. This Idol was brought
from Dandeshwar Temple Complex. It is a rare sculpture from the Kumaon region. Many
minor shrines can be seen on the road between Jageshwar and Dandeshwar.
