Maha Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple, Jageshwar, Uttarakhand
Maha Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Jageshwar near Almora in Uttarakhand, India.
This temple is the oldest and the largest temple of Jageshwar Temple complex.
It is believed that this is the first temple where Linga was first worshiped,
starting a tradition of worshipping Shiva as a Linga.
History

The Temple
This temple is located in the center of the complex. It
is numbered as Temple 76 in the complex. The temple follows Nagara style
architecture. It is dedicated to Mrityunjay form of Shiva, or the one who
conquered death. The Mrityunjay temple follows the Vastu Purusha Mandala plan
and elevation found in Hindu temple architecture texts.
The Temple consists of four pillared entry mandapa, Mukha
Mandapa, Antrala and Sanctum. The Sanctum is in square shape. The sanctum
houses a large Shiva Linga. There is an eye like carving can be seen in the
Lingam. The tower over the sanctum is a multistory structure, covered with a
wooden canopy.
There is a panel showing Lakulisa being worshiped by a
royal couple on the Shikhara of the temple. Maha Mrityunjay mantra were written
on the walls in bold letters. This temple is notable for its 25 short
inscriptions found on its mouldings, walls, pilasters and pillars. All these inscriptions
are dating back to 7th – 10th Century CE. These
inscriptions are in Sanskrit language and Brahmi script.
