Mallikarjuna Temple, Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh
Mallikarjuna Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord
Shiva located at Srisailam in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. It is
significant to the Hindu sects of both Shaivam and Shaktam as this temple is referred to as one of the
twelve Jyotirlingas of
Lord Shiva and as one of the eighteen Shakti
Peetas of goddess Parvati. Shiva is worshiped as Mallikarjuna, and is represented
by the lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Bhramaramba. It is the only temple
in India which is revered as both Jyotirlinga and Shaktipeeth.
The temple is situated on the Nallamalai range of the
Eastern Ghats, is known by different names like Srigiri, Srimala, Srinagara and
Rishabagiri. Srisailam referred to as
Tirupparuppatham in the Thevaram hymns. Srisailam is
the first of the Thevara Sthalams hailed by the Tamil hymns of the Nayanmars,
located outside of Tamilnadu/Kerala/Karnataka i.e. in Vada Naadu (the northern
lands). This is the 268th Devaram Paadal Petra Sthalam and 1st
Shiva Sthalam of Vada Nadu. Moovar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of
this Temple. The temple is maintained and administered by Chenchus.

The Devastanam has 25 individual cottages, Paathaleswra
Sadan with 23 Deluxe Suites, Sivasadanam guest house with 100 rooms, T.T.D Guest House
with 10 rooms, Chandeswara Sadanam with 22 rooms and a choultry consisting of 7
Halls. Devasthanam has also constructed a modern complex with 112 suites named as Gangasadan and Gowrisadan. At present, this complex
is leased out to Tourism Department.
